With the skills they learn in My Stellar Life with Autism, young adults on the autism spectrum may confidently help out around the kitchen, whether it's making supper for their parents, baking muffins for a neighbor, whipping up after-school snacks with friends, or eventually feeding their own families. Cooking, in our opinion, is a lot of fun! However, it also provides a great opportunity for young people to experiment, learn from their errors, follow instructions, develop their imaginations, become self-reliant, and grow resilient.
We have faith in the ability of food to unite people, foster community, increase dialogue, and deepen bonds.
The lifeskills program is a total of 12 sessions, held on every other Saturday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm from March to July. Each student is assigned a Registered Behavior Technician for behavior support and skill aquisition.
Task analysis, a method for reducing an overwhelming amount of work to more manageable chunks, is used in visual recipes. Every job is broken down into smaller, more manageable skills, and young adults can master new skills by completing existing ones in a precise sequence. Prompts, whether visual, physical, or verbal, may be necessary for students to execute each skill; as they gain independence, they might have their prompts reduced.
